EXPLANATION OF HEAT OUTPUT
FIREPLACE CAPACITY
Fireplace capacity is expressed in kilowatt heat output (kw)
Under normal south african winter conditions
1 kw has the capacity to heat up a volume of approximately 20 cubic meters .
This value will decrease with more extreme cold conditions: ie. below freezing level.
20 cu meters is equal to approximately
8 square meters for a standard room.
(square meters is calculated by dividing the cubic meter area by the height of the ceiling)
The calculation is as follows:
1 kw = 20 cu meters divide by 2,5 meters = 8 sq meters for a standard room
(Alternatively, to calculate the volume of the room in cubic meters, multiply the square meter area by the height of the ceiling)
NOTE : It will be wise to select a fireplace with a higher capacity. It makes sense to burn a higher capacity stove at an average comfortable rate than to burn a lower capacity stove “on full blast” to achieve the required effect of heating
